There is no 3rd generation iPod touch. That is a 2nd generation model which is still sold.
The 2nd generation has 128MB of RAM & the 3rd generation has 256MB. The 4th generation is expected to have 512MB.
The 2nd gen also has a 400 MHz processor compared to the 600 MHz in the 3rd & the expected 1 GHz in the 4th.
So this makes the choice pretty obvious. The 3rd gen is faster than the 2nd gen, but with a new iPod touch probably being released tomorrow you would be even better off getting one of those.
