A Trip To England Wouldn't Be Complete Without A Visit To York
In terms of historical importance and cultural heritage there are not many cities in the United Kingdom that can rival the North Yorkshire city of York, in central England. Over the years, York has been populated by a large variety of rulers, from Romans, to Vikings, to Normans and various families during the days of the English Civil War. All these different ruling families and races have played a huge part in shaping York into what it has become today. It has also meant that York is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England.
There is a wealth of things to see and do in York, a lot of which centers around York’s rich heritage. If you are planning a short break to the city, here is a list of some of the more interesting attractions and amenities to see and do in the city.
The first attraction on this list has to be York Castle. York Castle is actually a huge complex of buildings comprising of a keep, known as Clifford’s Tower, prisons, and law courts amongst other buildings. Today, the name York Castle generally refers to the keep which was built as part of the Norman castle in the Medieval Ages. The keep last played a military role during the English Civil War, but then fell into disrepair and was damaged in an explosion in 1684. Today, parts of the castle have now become the York Castle Museum and the Crown Court.
York is a city best seen on foot, and one of the most interesting parts of York to walk around is the Snikelways. The Snikelways is an area of small alleyways and footpaths in the city, many of which lead to the former market places of St. Samson’s Square and Pavement. All of these footpaths are too small for vehicles to pass through so you can spend a lovely sunny afternoon exploring the inner depths of the city in serenity.
If you are visiting York with your family, or even if you are just interested in some of the history that makes up the city, you should not miss out on a trip to the Jórvik Viking Center. Attracting more than 16 million visitors per year, on average, the Jórvik Viking Center is a fantastic trip back into time that takes you on a journey through the streets of York as it would have looked like in 866 AD when the Vikings took over the city. It is certainly a place not to miss for all the family and children absolutely love it.
