What Mac Pro Lap top would give me the best performance for Serrato Scratch Live? What specs I need?
I want to buy Serrato Scratch Live and I know it runs good with Mac Pro, though before I buy one I want people who know about Mac Pro and the program as well to tell me which Mac Pro would be the best? I never have owned an Apple product.
Answer:
I’m a MacBook Pro user, and only just heard about Serrato Scratch Live in your question, but I reckon I may be able to help.
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE SPECIFICATION

Serrato Scratch Live – Minimum Specs
PLEASE NOTE: These are the minimum requirements to run Scratch Live. For best performance and for use in professional situations we recommend you use a higher spec computer. We also recommend Intel processors.
Mac:
• Intel 1.8 GHz Core Duo (2.0 GHz, Core Duo for SL 4) or better
• 2 GB RAM*
• 1024 x 768 screen resolution
• OS X 10.4.11 or higher (See Note 2)
• Available USB port (USB 2.0 required for SL 2, SL 3, SL 4 & Sixty-Eight)
* If you have a large library, you will benefit from having more RAM.
Note 1: If you are using Scratch Live 2.0's more system intensive features such as DJ FX or AUX Deck plugins and are having issues you may need a higher spec computer for best results or make sure you have optimized your system: Windows 7 and Vista / Mac OS X.
Note 2: If you are planning on using HID devices on Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard), then you must use OSX version 10.5.6 or up. HID devices include Rane mixers such as the Rane Sixty-Eight or TTM 57SL and some 3rd party controllers such as the Pioneer CDJ-400, CDJ-900, or CDJ-2000 CD players.

BUYING A NEW MACBOOK
Presuming you want to buy a new MacBook, the specs will range from:
MacBook:
• Intel 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo
• 2 GB RAM (configurable up to 4 GB)
• 1280 x 800 screen resolution (13.3-inch glossy widescreen)
• OS X 10.6.8 aka Snow Leopard (10.7.0 aka Lion sometime before end of July 2011)
• Two USB 2.0 ports
» source – http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook?mco=MTM3NDg3NTI
As you can see, the entry level MacBook already exceeds the ‘Serrato Scratch Live – Minimum Specs’ in all except RAM, which I’d recommend you upgrade to 4 GB – £947.00 incl. VAT in the UK.
Other configurable upgrades and pre-installed software are also available; eg:;
At the top of the range:
MacBook Pro 17-inch:
• Intel 2.2GHz quad-core Core i7
• 4 GB RAM (configurable up to 8 GB)
• 1920 x 1200 screen resolution (17-inch glossy widescreen; optional antiglare)
• OS X 10.6.8 aka Snow Leopard (10.7.0 aka Lion sometime before end of July 2011)
• Three USB 2.0 ports
» source – http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_mac/family/macbook_pro?mco=MTM3NDc0NDI
This MacBook Pro 17-inch far exceeds the ‘Serrato Scratch Live – Minimum Specs’ in all respects – £2,099.00 incl. VAT base price in the UK.
Other configurable upgrades and pre-installed software are also available; eg:
The MacBook Pro has three Solid State Drive upgrade options: 128, 256 and 512 GB. SSD’s are SOOOOO much more reliable than regular spinning platter hard disc drives, because they have no moving parts to damage, so I’d recommend adding the largest capacity SSD you can afford.
