PS Jailbreak - Install Your PS3 Games To Your Hard Drive With The Worlds First PS3 Modchip
Just when we all thought it was never going to happen, here comes the PS Jailbreak. Some people call it the PS3 Jailbreak or a PS3 Modchip, but whatever the name, it's one cool little accessory. Its a small USB dongle, that tells the PS3 that it's okay to install games on to your PS3 hard drive and then will also allow you to load them from there too, sands the disc.
It’s much like the USB Modchips that came out long ago for the Playstation 2, that didn’t require any internal soldering of any kind, and were just plug in and play type modchips that were so easy to use and install that they went off the shelves.
The PS Jailbreak works and acts exactly the same as the older PS2 USB Modchips. All you have to do is plug it in to your PS3 USB port and you're set to go. And then another USB flash drive so that you can then install your homebrew games and applications, and most importantly, your Backup manager.
A good number of PS3 owners believed that a PS3 modchip was just not possible, that the PS3 was just not open and unable to be modified, let alone have a product that actually worked.
The thing that amazes me however is not so much the modchip, but that it can be installed and used as easily as it can be. No soldering or wiring at all, and you don't need some engineering degree to figure out where to put it..
To be honest, if we look at any of the modchips for the PS2 or even the original Xbox, they all needed soldering of wires inside the console itself, in some cases as many as 25 or more wires had to be soldered to tiny points on the motherboard for the modchip to do what it was meant to do. Not with the PS Jailbreak. It’s just plug in and play.
There is also a small bit of software included. The backup manager is the software that actually RUNS the modchip / jailbreak. After you've installed the dongle, you also have to install a piece of software called the Backup Manager, don't worry - it's included with the PS Jailbreak from what I can tell.
Once the backup manager is installed on to the menu of the PS3, any time you insert a game disc, it will ask you if you wish to install it on to the PS3 hard drive. Once selected, you can see the progress bar as your game is being installed on the Playstation 3 hard drive.
The installation time varies based on the game you are installing, but so far, I have not had any game take more than 5 minutes to install.
And now the fun begins. After your game is installed just go back into the backup manager and pick the game you want to play. Load it up and you're good to go. Just click on the game you want to play, and it will load for you instantly.
It’s faster to play games from the internal hard drive because there’s virtually no load times. The HDD loads games up to 20 times faster than the same game from the disc. Again, the biggest speed increase I noticed was when I would beat a level in a game. The next level came on almost instantly.
Whether you already have a PS3, or are planning to buy a PS3 sometime in the near future, make sure you get yourself the PS Jailbreak too - you won't regret it. You'll not only protect you investment of Playstation 3 games, but you'll also get to play the games faster as they will load directly from the hard drive.
